Dena'ina place names continue to infiltrate our vocabulary
I'm not trying to plug ACS, but I was thrilled to see this email ad for a new phone store, located in the Tikahtnu (= 'Cook Inlet' in Dena'ina) Commons. Slowly but surely, Native names are creeping into everyday Alaskan vocabulary.
It's been an uphill battle Gary but its finally starting to pay dividends. I had suggested to CIRI that the mall should be named Tikahtnu in 2005 but it wasnt until 2006 after the convention center was named that they decided on the name. So now it shows up in at both locations. I myself always liked Nuti better seeing as its easier to say and I think a more interesting name but have yet been able to persuade anyone to use it yet.
