Doyon Foundation Seeking Language Revitalization Program Director

Language revitalization efforts in Alaska continue to gain momentum. The latest news comes from Doyon Foundation, which this week announced a recruitment for a Language Revitalization Program Director. The position will be a cornerstone in Doyon's efforts to coordinate Athabascan language revitalization in the Doyon region.

As Doyon language committee member Alan Hayton pointed out in his address to the TCC Education Summit this morning, there are many new techniques and teaching methods which can be applied to teaching Native languages. The new Director will be able to take advantage cutting edge research while also interfacing with ongoing programs, such as those at the University of Alaska and the Alaska Native Heritage Center.

More information about the position can be found on the Doyon Foundation website and in this job description (pdf). There's also a nice blog post about the program, which quotes Victor Nicholas in summing up the motivation for developing this program:
"It's our language -- it's who we are."
